DAMN. King Kunta done did the damn thing! Winning the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music that is. Surprising, yes. Deserving, yes. First, let’s put this win into perspective. When you think of a Pulitzer Prize winner it’s likely that writers and poets come to mind. Poet Robert Frost a 4-time winner may be familiar to you. Or perhaps it’s a winner from the realm of journalism and reporting. Who hasn’t heard of The New York Times? Oh a winner from the music category? Bet you can’t name one. I myself scanned the list of past winners and finally found a familiar name in Wynton Marsalis… way back in ’97.
It’s a historical win because he’s the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the music category. 75 years until a change happened. That’s truly eye-opening. We all know how great Kendrick Lamar’s album is; those that appreciate hip hop music most certainly do. Many pop-centric music fans would have heard his undeniable banger of a single Humble. But for it to enter the psyche and rock the world of 20 seemingly snobby music types… Let’s see what they had to say:
“DAMN., by Kendrick Lamar
Recording released on April 14, 2017, a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
In other words, they really, really, really loved it!
Or maybe they wanted to show they’re finally in touch with the music world and found that one non-classical/jazz album that would usher them into pop culture relevancy.
Either way, we’re sure Kendrick will do something good with that $15k.
